Ken Hammond: Decorated officer Hammond resigns over sex investigation
By Clarencia Cynrae on January 12th, 2009Ken Hammond, a former police officer with Ogden Police in Salt Lake City, has resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor. Ken Hammond officially resigned on Friday, Jan. 9.
Ken Hammond resigned after learning that the police department intended to fire him. His lawyer, Brenda Beaton gave this statement. Ogden City Attorney, Gary Williams, declined to comment further on Ken Hammond.
Randy Watt, the Ogden Police Assistant Chief, claimed that the internal investigation was on-going and denied reaching any decision on firing Hammond. Ken Hammond was charged on Dec. 29, with unlawful sexual behavior with a teen aged 16 or 17. The allegation came from a report made on July 12, 2005. Hammond will appear in court on Jan. 27.
Ken Hammond had worked for Ogden police for 8 years. Hammond was on paid leave during the investigation. Hammond was decorated with state and national honors in 2007 for being a hero. Hammond was off duty having dinner at Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square mall on Feb. 12, 2007 when he stepped in to delay a gunman who had shot 5 shoppers. By that time, Salt Lake City police arrived and shot the gunman, Bosnian immigrant Sulejman Talovic, dead.
