Joseph Edward Duncan III was charged for the kidnapping and death of Dylan Groene. The jury has to decide if he should be sentenced to death or sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

Joseph Edward Duncan III pleaded guilty to murdering Dylan Groene and Shasta Groene’s older brother (Slade Groene), mother Brenda Groene and mother’s fiancé, Mark McKenzie, in the family’s home in Coeur d’Alene, near Kellogg, Idaho.

Dylan Groene and Shasta Groene were sexually abused before Duncan killed Dylan, 9, at a Montana campsite. Shasta, then 8, was rescued on July 2, 2005, in a Coeur d’Alene restaurant. A waitress recognized Shasta Groene from the news reports.

FBI found Joseph Edward Duncan’s laptop but could not crack the encrypted password.
