Jose Sucuzhanay was mistaken for a gay as he walked with his brother, in Brooklyn, on Sunday, Dec. 7. Jose Sucuzhanay and his brother had been drinking so they had leaned on one another for support.

A group of men in a passing SUV shouted anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs at Jose Sucuzhanay and his brother. The Sucuzhanay brothers were from Ecuador but were mistaken to be Hispanics. One man came out of the car and smashed a beer bottle over Jose Sucuzhanay’s head.

Jose Sucuzhanay was sent to hospital and had brain surgery. Sucuzhanay was brain dead and on Tuesday, Dec. 9, he was taken off life support. Police are searching for 3 assailants.
