Jose Luis Garza, of northern Mexico, weighed 990 pounds. Garza’s weight was about half a ton. Jose Luis Garza was bedridden. Garza had appealed for help to reduce his weight on Mexico’s TV. Emergency officers went to his house and knocked down Garza’s bedroom wall. Then they loaded Garza onto his friend’s pickup truck and drove him to hospital. Jose Garza was pronounced DOA. Jose Garza died of heart failure. There are photos of his burial here.

Jose Garza lived some distance away from Manuel Uribe. Uribe, who once was 1,230 pounds, was the World’s fattest Man. Uribe said he had been dieting and has lost 550 pounds. Uribe credited Dr Barry Sears’ Zone Diet.

Jose Garza was too late in seeking help for his obesity. His brother, Pedro Garza, blamed state officers for failing to help Jose earlier. However, the state officials said there was very little they could do. A normal ambulance could not transport Jose Garza. The attention at the hospital would be the same he got at home.

Jose Garza said he ate after he became depressed over the grief of losing his parents over a short period of time. He could not control his diet. During the last four months, Jose Garza was bedridden. Garza’s health deteriorated over last weekend and he struggled to breathe and eat. By the time the emergency workers arrived after being summoned, Jose Garza was in a bad condition.
