John List: How John List was captured
By Clarencia Cynrae on November 8th, 2009John List was one of the Most Wanted men on the run in America. John List, originally from New Jersey, had been on the run for 18 years before he was captured by the FBI. List had killed his wife, his mother and three kids.
John List probably escaped detection because he looked different from his old photos. The TV program, “America’s Most Wanted”, hired a sculptor named Frank Bender. Bender was asked to sculpt the skull and face of John List.
Bender used the old pictures of List that were available. Bender made a three dimensional skull and added clay for the face. Bender aged the face by adding wrinkles, a receding hairline because List had aged since the 18 years on the run.
In 1989, America’s Most Wanted showed the new reconstructed face of John List in its TV program. About a fortnight after the episode was aired, FBI captured John List. They found List as they had a big help looking at Bender’s work.
Bender and List made the TV program popular and honored the show with credibility. “America’s Most Wanted” suddenly became a channel for catching fugitives.
John List was convicted of the 5 murders and sentenced to 5 life terms of imprisonment. List died at the age of 82 in prison. List caught pneumonia and died in 2008.
