John Demjanjuk: Suspected Nazi John Demjanjuk extradition possible
By Therese Lisieux on November 10th, 2008John Demjanjuk, 88, of Ohio, has been accused of being a Nazi who was responsible for killing 29,000 Jews at a concentration camp in Poland. Kurt Schrimm said he believed the transport lists of prisoners who arrived at Sobibor (Poland) during John Demjanjuk’s 7 month tenure at Sobibor is evidence enough of Demjanjuk’s involvement in the Jews’ deaths.
Demjanjuk is a retired auto industry worker. John Demjanjuk said he was a Soviet soldier whon was captured by the Germans in 1942. Demjanjuk emigrated to the US in 1952. Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel in 1986 when the US Justice Department thought he was a Nazi guard known as Ivan the Terrible at the Treblinka death camp. Demjanjuk was detained for 7 years before the Israeli high court found another man was responsible. Although John Demjanjuk denied having involvement in the Jews’ deaths, he admitted being a worker in Sobibir.
Demjanjuk is Number 2 on the Most Wanted list of Nazi war criminals. Number 1 is Aribert Heim, a SS doctor.
