Jeanne Eagels: Eagels first posthumous Award nominated actress (photos/video)

By Clarencia Cynrae on January 11th, 2009

Jeanne Eagels (June 26, 1984 – Oct 3, 1929) was the first actress/actor posthumously considered for the Academy Award for her 1929 role in “The Letter.” Toxicology reports evidence suggested alcoholism or heroin as Eagels’ cause of death at 35, although there was no official consensus on the case of death.

Eagels made the successful transition from a silent film actress to a “Talkie” or a film with sound.

Eagels lost the Oscar to Mary Pickford for her film “Coquette.” “Jeanne Eagels” was a fictional account of Eagels’ life, made in 1957 by Columbia Pictures. Kim Novak acted as Eagels.

Heath Ledger may be considered  for an Oscar and he joins Jeanne Eagels as an actor who is considered posthumously for an award.
