Jamie Burns was a cheerleader from Southern Methodist University (SMU). Burns was discovered to have a heart problem.

She wears a pacemaker to correct her heart problem. SMU insurance does not cover her kind of medical needs. SMU in turn is afraid of a lawsuit should anything happen to Jamie Burns while she does cheerleading for them. SMU retired Burns. They will still honor the promise of the scholarship for Burns. Since Jamie Burns is not allowed to move vigorously during a game, she became known as the ”cheerleader banned from moving.”
