Col. James L Merchant III died during a parachute jump in Florida. James Merchant was on a parachute training jump when he landed in a retention pond in Tampa, Florida. Merchant was found by a police rescue diver. Merchant was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Merchant left behind his wife, Terri Merchant, of Valrico, and his parents, of St Augustine.
