James Conway returned home but to the wrong house. His neighbor, Bert DeGuzman, suspecting an intruder or robber, shot at him twice. In Florida, it was legal to use lethal force for one’s protection. Deputies arrived at DeGuzman’s home to see James Conway injured on the floor. Conway told police he was shot in his own home. He was unaware he had entered his neighbor’s house.
