Herbin Hoyos: Hoyos, Colombia Journalist of the Year
By Therese Lisieux on October 22nd, 2008
If you have a Colombian family member who has been kidnapped, do not be afraid to approach Herbin Hoyos. Herbin Hoyos is the radio host of the program, “Kidnapped Voices.”
Ingrid Betancourt, one of the high profile kidnap victims in Colombia, has been released in July 2008. Betancourt had been in captivity since 2002.
This is a very special radio program for the relatives of Colombian kidnap victims. The relatives can broadcast messages to their kidnapped ones. Herbin Hoyos pleads with the kidnappers on air to allow their victims to listen in and be in touch with their separated world. Herbin Hoyos has hosted “Kidnapped Voices “ for 14 years.
In October, Herbin Hoyos won Colombia’s highest award for journalists, the Simon Bolivar prize for Journalist of the Year, followed by the National Peace Prize. Herbin Hoyos shares the Colombian national Peace Prize with William Perez, a medic held with Betancourt who attended to her and other hostages as they battled tropical illnesses.
