Herbert Herb Baumeister: Baumeister suspected to be gays’ serial killer
By Clarencia Cynrae on April 12th, 2009Herb Baumeister’s full name is Herbert Richard Baumeister. Baumeister was accused of being a murderer. Baumeister committed suicide before he stood trial. Baumeister lived from April7, 1947 to July 3, 1996. Baumeister stayed in Westfield, Indiana, on the outskirts of Indianapolis.
Baumeister was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a teen but he did not receive treatment.
In 1988, Baumeister started a chain of thrift and discount stores called the Sav-A-Lot stores. Baumeister became wealthy and respected.
In the 1990s, Indianapolis Police Department were alerted to serial disappearances of gay men. A tip on a licence plate lead police to Baumeister. In 1995, Police approached Baumeister to request to search his home. Baumeister and his wife, Julie Baumeister, refused to allow the search. In 1996, Julie Baumeister filed for divorce from Baumeister. While Baumeister was away on vacation,Julie permitted police to conduct the search. Police found the remains of 11 bodies. Only four men were identified.
Baumeister was in Ontariowhen he committed suicide by a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Baumeister’s suicide note said he did it because of his failing marriage and business. V did not confess to the serial murders of the men whose remains were discovered in his backyard. Nine more bodies were found along I-70 in Indiana and Ohio, between Indianapolis and Columbus. Julie Baumeister told police Herb Baumeister had made numerous trips to Ohio, claiming he was traveling on store business.
Julie Baumeister said her husband had mood swings and erratic behavior. She said she was frightened by his behavior and consequently filed for divorce.
Herb Baumeister ‘s story was made into a TV episode for A & E Network, “The Secret Life of a Serial Killer”. That episode was aired in 1997.
Herb Baumeister’s story was also made into an episode in “The Investigators” on TruTV in 2008.
