Heidi Krieger was East Germany’s 1986 European women’s shot-put champion. Heidi Krieger became Andreas Krieger after a sex-change operation in 1997.

Andreas claimed he was duped into taking many steroids by his coaches without his knowledge. When he was Heidi, he faced physical and emotional problems because of the chemicals that controlled the body. Andreas Krieger criticized the old GDR regime for churning out atheletes without regard to their personal lives. Heidi Krieger experienced manhood and she chose to change her gender to become Andreas Krieger.
