The Chinese workers burn away unwanted parts and then salvage the valuable components. One worker is paid an average of $8 per day. That is considered a fortune in Guiyu, China. In Guiyu, China, the workers are evidently aware that what they are doing is not so right. The CBS Pelley film crew were attacked when the Chinese recyclers became aware of what the Americans were doing. During the burning process, toxins are released into the environment. In Guiyu, China, the locals are more concerned about the money, wages and struggle for survival.
Scientists claimed that Guiyu, China, has the highest levels of cancer causing toxins in the world. The toxins have affected the area to such an extent that potable water had to be brought into the area as local water cannot be used. The government maybe in the know about the situation in Guiyu, China, but they were alleged to be deliberately keeping mum over the dangers. Guiyu, China has a lucrative trade in recycling computer components. The residents of Guiyu, China, intend to keep it that way.
