By Angie Anthony on June 28th, 2008

Gill Mezey, a psychiatrist, released a mental patient without even seeing him to assess him. John Barrett, a paranoid schizophrenic, absconded. The next day, John Barrett, 43, killed Denis Finnegan, 50, as he cycled through Richmond Park in South West London. Gill Mezey was suspended on full pay.

In Mar 2005, John Barrett was imprisoned for life because of the manslaughter charge.

Dr Gill Mezey decided to sue South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust for suspending her on full pay. Gill Mezey claimed that she had losses when she could not practise.

St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust said that they are preparing a response and it will be ready by July 11.

I am a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel & Development. I have been a service user of this Trust since 2001. In my opinion, as soon as the very thorough (over 450 pages) report was published in Autumn 2006 Dr Gill Mezey should have been dismissed for negligence via the Trust’s Human Resources procedures. She was lucky to get paid for so long to stay at home and thereby not fail any more patients (and, possibly, endanger staff and members of the public.

Hi. Thanks for sharing. It is always good to hear from a personal user of the Trust.
