fluorescent monkeys: glow in the dark monkeys (photos)

By Therese Lisieux on May 28th, 2009

There are new fluorescent monkeys. The skin, hair and blood glow green under an ultraviolet light. Central Institute for Experimental Animals in Japan has created the glow in the dark monkeys.

The fluorescent glowing monkeys will be used for research to discover cures for Parkinson’s and MS. Scientists may breed monkey colonies with genetic defects that cause incurable diseases. These specimens are needed for the gene pool for scientists to work on.

Is it wrong to deliberately create monkeys (or any other animals) with gene defects? Do humans have the right to use monkeys for testing?
