Florencia Vasquez, of Brooklyn, 36, confessed to assaulting her daughter, Alejandra Vasquez, 11. Florencia Vasquez used a mop handle to hit her daughter on her head and the handle broke. Alejandra Vasquez was beaten and became listless, had vomited and fell sick lying on her bed. Sometime on Sat Oct 25 and Sun., Oct 26, Alejandra Vasquez died.

Alejandra Vasquez had arrived from her father’s house in Mexico. She had stayed with her mother, Florencia Vasquez. After Florencia Vasquez confessed to police, they went to her apartment and removed the mop with the broken handle. Florencia Vasquez told police she beat her daughter Alejandra because she hated her father.

Florencia Vasquez lived in the 3 bedroon apartment with a companion, a livery cab driver who rented a room, and three children aged 6, 3 and 1. Alejandra Vasquez had an elder sister who was living with the same mother, Florencia Vasquez, but that older girl was removed and placed in foster care. Brooklyn’s Administration for Children’s Services, in charge of the child welfare agency, refused to elaborate on why the elder Vasquez girl was in a foster home.

Florencia Vasquez was questioned but not charged. Police are waiting for the results of an autopsy on the body of Alejandra Vasquez.
