Updated November 7 2009 – Gwyneth Paltrow will act as Greta Wegener. Paltrow will have a challenging time playing the artist who was the catalyst to changing her husband after she asked him to pose as a female model.

Paltrow will act opposite Nicole Kidman, who plays Einar Wegener, the world’s first surgical transsexual.

Paltrow was signed on after Charlize Theron quit the role.

Einar Wegener was married to Greta Wegener in 1904 and remained married to her until 1930. Einar had adopted the name of Lili Elbe and dressed as a woman in public.

Einar underwent 5 operations to transform his physique into a woman’s. Einar had just completed his 5th operation when he passed away in 1931.

Einar Wegener was a man who posed as a woman because his wife, Greta Wegener wanted a model for her painting. When Einar Wegener’s portraits were popular in Copenhagen, Greta Wegener encouraged her husband to use the female disguise. Slowly, Einar transformed and had a metamorphosis into the female form. Einar Wegener became the world’s first transgender/ transsexual.

The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff

David Ebershoff wrote a book in 2000 on Einar and Greta Wegener. Ebershoff’s book is called The Danish Girl. The Danish Girl is a fictional story that was inspired by Einar Wegener and Greta Wegener. It is sold on Amazon.com.

Nicole Kidman has been roped in to play Einar Wegener, after his transgender operation. Charlize Theron is rumored to have the role of Greta Wegener. The movie will be released in 2011.
