Eileen Bernstein: Eileen Bernstein’s slavery social studies

By Clarencia Cynrae on December 6th, 2008

Eileen Bernstein, a white social studies teacher, tied up the hands and feet of two black female students during a seventh grade class discussion. Bernstein thought that would make the lesson lively.

One female student’s mother, Christine Shand, of Haverstraw, has responded angrily. The local chapter of the NAACP, (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), of White Plains, New York, has also reacted strongly.

Christine Shand has complained to the Haverstraw Middle School staff and the superintendent said they would investigate. The student, Gabrielle Shand, cried at home when she told her mother that her teacher, Eileen Bernstein bound her hands and feet and made her crawl under a desk to simulate the conditions experienced by African slaves. Christine Shand wants the teacher, Eileen Bernstein, to be removed from the class. Shand may consider further action like filing a lawsuit.
