De Matteo was born in NY. Her mother was a playwright while her father was a furniture manufacturer. De Matteo’s original ambition was to become a director.

De Matteo lives in NYC. She is currently dating Shooter Jennings, whose father is the country music singer Waylon Jennings. De Matteo and Jennings had a child together on Nov 28, 2007. Alabama Gypsy Rose was born to the couple.
