Dr Kong Fa Lan Keng Lun breast screening: breast scanning doctor practising

By Therese Lisieux on October 11th, 2009

Dr Kong Fa Lan Keng Lun, the doctor who made mistakes in breast screening in St Margaret’s Hospital, in Epping, UK, has been allowed to practice medical procedures by the General Medical Council. Dr Kong was blamed for making errors in diagnosis between March 2003 and November 2004. Around 6000 NHS tests had to be reviewed.

Eighteen women from this batch who had breast scanning were mistakenly told they were cancer-free. Some of these affected women have since died as a result of untreated breast cancer.

Dr Lan Keng Lun was banned for 2 years from practicing medicine but now, the ban has been lifted.

The GMC explained that Dr Lan Keng Lun was retrained. He now works for Ipswich Hospital.

Frances Nathan was one of the women who died of breast cancer. Mrs Nathan had a lump in her breast but she was told she didn’t have cancer. Mrs Nathan died in 2006. Her widower and husband, Mr Aubrey Nathan, 79, said he thought Dr Lan Keng Lun should be struck off the register and prevented from practicing.
