Dr Humayra Abedin: Humayra Abedin’s escape from Bangladesh (photos/ video)

By Therese Lisieux on December 20th, 2008

Dr Humayra Abedin, 32, a National Health Service doctor in the UK, was deceived into visiting her parents in Bangladesh, her native homeland. Dr Humayra Abedin was imprisoned by her family and drugged.

Under the influence of drugs, Humayra Abedin was forced into a marriage she had objected to all along. Humayra Abedin managed to contact her friends back in the UK.

Dr Humayra Abedin’s UK friends alerted the Bangladeshi human rights organisation called Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK). This organization visited her family home to look for her. A Bangladeshi court freed Dr Humayra Abedin and ordered that she be returned to the UK. Back in UK, Dr Humayra Abedin obtained the High Court order to issue injunctions against her parents, her paternal uncle and the man she was forced to marry.
