Douglas Garrity: Braden River High School football coach Garrity died

By Clarencia Cynrae on March 23rd, 2009

Douglas Garrity, 27, was an assistant football coach from Braden River High School. Garrity was a popular, beloved coach. On Saturday, March 21, Garrity was traveling in a truck as a passenger when an accident occurred.

Joshua Hunter, 32, of Bradenton, was the driver of the truck. The 2001 Ford truck went out of control on State Road 681, near the entrance ramp. Besides Garrity and Hunter, Matthew Braselton, 26,of Bradenton and James Hunter, 38, of Myakka City, were also riding in the truck. The men were traveling home after spending time helping out at a fundraiser.

Hunter, the driver, lost control on a curve and the truck cut across the road. Hunter tried to correct but due to the circumstances, there was over-correction. The truck had a spin and Garrity, in the rear seat, was thrown out as the truck flipped over. Garrity suffered serious injuries and died. The other three men survived. The crash is being investigated.

Douglas Garrity had worked as the assistant varsity football coach since 2007. Garrity trained with the football team. Apart from coaching football, Garrity also taught for the Braden River High School’s dropout prevention program.

Jim Pauley, Principal of Braden River High, praised Garrity as a great teacher with real passion for teaching his students. Garrity was popular for being himself, a nice man. Pauley expressed his grief. He hoped that the counselors would aid the school students to cope with the great loss.

Douglas Garrity, RIP.
