Dorothy Powers Brewer & James Brewer in Jimmy Carroll murder case
By Clarencia Cynrae on March 30th, 2009James Brewer was supposed to stand trial for the murder of Jimmy Carroll in 1977. Brewer was charged for Carroll’s murder, in Tennessee, but he disappeared before his court trial.
James Brewer is now 58 and during the course of a year, has suffered two strokes. Brewer wanted to talk to a detective about the case but it seemed his wife refused to allow him to confess. Brewer remains sickly and is fed through a tube.
Brewer agreed to return to Tennessee to stand trial for the first degree murder charges. On Monday, March 30, a judge will decide if Brewer could be released on bond. The sheriff wants Brewer warded in a state prison hospital that can provide care for him.
Jimmy Carroll’s family talked about Brewer. They said James Brewer had suspected his wife, Dorothy Powers Brewer, of having an affair with Jimmy Carroll. That was the motive for the shooting.
The original charge in 1977 said James Brewer drove up to a service station, shot Jimmy Carroll twice, and then drove away.
Jimmy Carroll’s sisters waited about 32 years for this day. Some of the witnesses at the service station are still alive. Some evidence was lost but the rest of the documents and the murder weapon were still kept.
