Deborah Matis-Engle: Matis-Engle sentenced for vehicular manslaughter
By Clarencia Cynrae on April 4th, 2009Deborah Matis-Engle crashed into a line of vehicles while she was text messaging on her cell phone on August 13, 2007. Matis-Engle killed a woman whose car was rear ended when her vehicle exploded and caught fire.
Matis-Engle was speeding and text messaging when her car crashed into vehicles which had stopped at a construction zone. The prosecutor said Matis-Engle had been paying her bills by cell phone in the time prior to her crash. Matis-Engle was in the middle of paying a bill when her car crashed into Petra Winn’s car. Winn died when her car caught fire.
Matis-Engle was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Her attorney said he would appeal against her vehicular manslaughter conviction and appeal against the sentence on Deborah Matis-Engle.
