Halderman asked for $2 million to sell Letterman his idea for writing and producing the story on his secret affairs. Halderman said he might still write the book after getting his $2 million check.
Stephanie Birkitt had broken up with Robert Halderman shortly before this extortion blew up.
Letterman said it was up to the women if they wanted to identify themselves as his former girlfriends.
Jay Leno and Jimmy Fallon cracked jokes about David Letterman and his relationships with his TV staffers.
Updated Oct 2 – Robert Halderman’s live-in girlfriend is Stephanie Birkitt. Birkitt used to be the former lover of David letterman. Halderman read Birkitt’s diary and saw her pictures. That gave him the idea of blackmailing Letterman.
Halderman is divorced from his former wife, Patty Montet. Halderman pays $6000 monthly alimony and child support to Montet.

Updated Oct 2 – Robert Halderman, 51, was arrested on suspicion of attempted grand larceny in the first degree. Halderman, lives in Norwalk, CT. Halderman works in the TV industry, in “48 Hours”. After news of his involvement broke out, Halderman was suspended from work.
Oct 2 – David Letterman testified before a grand jury in Manhattan that he received an extortion attempt. Someone tried to blackmail Letterman.
Letterman admitted he had several affairs with his staffers before he got married and the extortion was related to the women he slept with. Letterman co-operated with the authorities, who asked him to mail a fake $2 million check to the blackmailer.
Letterman dated women who happened to work for him and he was being blackmailed for $2 million. The suspected blackmailer was arrested. Dorothy Mengering, Letterman’s mother, confirmed this news to the press.
Letterman’s wife, Regina Lasko, told her mother-in-law the news. Letterman said he wanted to protect the women and his family. The people who are and were involved with him may suffer so he reported the blackmail.
Letterman was once married to Michele Cook, his college sweetheart. That marriage lasted from 1969 to 1977. Letterman dated Merrill Markoe but broke up in 1980s. Then Letterman dated Regina Lasko in 1986. Leterman and Lasko have been together ever since. They were married earlier this year.
