John Ensign admitted he had an affair with his campaign staffer. Ensign’s adultery with his former married girlfriend lasted from Dec 2007 – Aug 2008. John Ensign apologized for his actions. Ensign’s wife, Darlene Ensign, said their marriage has become stronger. Darlene Ensign confirmed her love for her husband.

John Ensign said both the woman and her husband, also one of his staff, had left his payroll by May 2008.

John Ensign was separated from his wife Darlene Ensign and during that time, Mr Ensign started an affair with his staffer, Cynthia “Cindy” Hampton.

Mr Ensign later reconciled with Darlene and he paid Cynthia Hampton a severance package before she left his employment. Mr Ensign met Doug Hampton, the husband of Cynthia “Cindy” Hampton. Mr Hampton asked Mr Ensign for a large sum of money. Briefly, it seemed Mr Hampton was extorting money from Mr Ensign. That was when Ensign decided to go public with his past extramarital affair.

Doug Hampton and Cindy Hampton confirmed that John Ensign were referring to them when he talked about his affair and the husband of his former staffer. However, the Hamptons claimed they were the ones who tried to be discreet and keep the past a secret. Nothing was mentioned directly about the allegations of extortion on John Ensign.
