Flight 61, flying from Brussels to Newark landed safely at Newark Liberty International Airport. The pilot of Flight 61 died in mid-air. Two first officers helped to fly the plane on auto-pilot.

Craig Lenell, 60, of Texas, was named as the pilot. His wife, Lynda Lenell, said he had no known health problems. Mrs Lenell said Craig served in the Vietnam war as an Air Force pilot.

The co-pilots of Flight 61 thought Lenell was asleep. When they tried to awaken him, there was no response. A cardiologist passenger who responded for help said Lenell was dead when he examined him. The doctor tried using a defibrillator but could not revive Lenell.
