Connie Culp face transplant pictures: Connie Culp face transplant (photos/ video)

By Clarencia Cynrae on May 5th, 2009

Connie Culp has a new face transplanted for her. Culp received the face of a woman who had died. Culp is the receiver of the USA’s first face transplant. Culp lost her face after a shotgun blast hit her in the middle of her face 5 years ago. It was only recently, 5 months ago, that Culp had a new face transplanted.

Connie Culp’s new face is a far cry from being picture perfect but it is a big leap forwards. Culp was severely impaired after her injuries but now she could do the things denied to her. Culp can smile, talk, smell with a nose and taste her food again. Doctors are waiting for her facial nerves and circulation to improve before working on her new face. Doctors will reduce the extra folds of skin and shape Culp’s face later.

Connie Culp was grateful to the donor’s family for giving permission for the deceased woman’s face to be removed for donation.

Connie Culp lost her face in 2004. Culp’s husband, Thomas Culp, shot her face with a gun. Thomas Culp shot himself too but he survived. Thomas Culp was sentenced to 7 years in prison.
