Cecilia Barnes sued Yahoo in 2005 when her ex boyfriend posted her naked photos online in a fraudulent profile. Barnes’ ex boyfriend stole her identity to pose as her to chat in an internet online chat room. Barnes’ former boyfriend pretended to be her to solicit sex.

The court ruled Yahoo was not responsible for liability for material posted on their sites by external parties. How could Yahoo know that Barnes’ profile was fake or created by her vindictive ex boyfriend?

Barnes, of Portland, Oregon may pursue further action if she decides to sue for the promise to remove the fraud photos and profile.
