Ceara Sturgis is a lesbian student who wants to have her high school year book photo published in her tuxedo. Ceara Sturgis and the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi are fighting Wesson Attendance Center to get her picture published in the yearbook.
The principal of the Wesson Attendance Center, in Jackson, Mississippi, argued that only the male gender are allowed to wear tuxedos.
Ceara Sturgis’ mother, Veronica Rodriguez, said her daughter didn’t even own a dress so how was she expected to wear a dress for her senior high school photo!
The State Department of Education in Mississippi said there was no state policy on the dress code for yearbook photos.
Wesson Attendance Center has until Oct 23 to respond or the ACLU will file a lawsuit to claim discrimination.
