Carlos Sousa Jr., 17, was killed inside the San Francisco Zoo on Dec. 25, 2007. Carlos Sousa died after being mauled by a Siberian tiger named Tatiana. Tatiana weighed 250 pounds and had escaped from its enclosure.

Carlos Sousa’s parents, Marilza Sousa and Carlos Sousa Sr., seek unspecified damages for wrongful death, negligence, reckless conduct and maintaining a public nuisance.

Carlos Sousa’s friends, Kulbir Dhaliwal, 24, and Paul Dhaliwal, 20, also of San Jose, had filed a lawsuit in federal court last month. The Dhaliwal brothers accused the city and zoo of being negligent and accused the authorities of defaming them. The Dhaliwal brothers were accused by the zoo of provoking the tiger and causing the attack.
