By Clarencia Cynrae on July 23rd, 2009

Carl Brent Worthington and Raylene Worthington, a couple in Oregon, were tried in court for manslaughter of their daughter, Ava Worthington. Carl and Raylene Worthington were acquitted of causing Ava’s death in 2008.

Carl Worthington was convicted on other charges of criminal mistreatment. Mr Worthington faces up to 1 year in prison for the misdemeanor offence.

Ava Worthington was 15 months old when she died. Ava had a cyst on her neck that could be treated with antibiotics. Family and church members prayed over Ava instead of seeking medical treatment.

Ava Worthington was not eating and drinking properly because of her cyst. She fell prey to pneumonia and died.

The Worthington family belongs to the church of the Followers of Christ. The husbands in this group make the important decisions. Brent Worthington was supposedly more responsible for Ava’s condition than her mother.

Carl Brent Worthington will be sentenced on July 31.
