Candy Vigneri, 44, of Maryland, gave birth in a portable toilet and dropped her newborn into the toilet. Vigneri delivered her baby in the portable toilet in Long Wharf Park in Cambridge. Vigneri left her newborn in the waste tank while she smoked a cigarette outside the toilet.

Vigneri saw a male passerby about to enter the toilet she just used and warned him that she had given birth in the toilet. The man called the police while Vigneri went back into the toilet to retrieve her baby.

The infant was unresponsive and covered in an antibacterial chemical that was in the waste tank.

Candy Vigneri claimed she was unaware she was pregnant when she went to the toilet. Vigneri was arrested on Wednesday, July 1. Vigneri faces charges of child abuse and reckless endangerment of a child. Vigneri was detained on a $50,000 bond.

Emergency responders managed to save the baby and the child was warded in hospital. The social services will be in charge of the baby after the infant girl gets released from hospital.
