Burt Lopez, Warren Skip York, Joshua Cartwright: Lopez, York, Cartwright, RIP
By Therese Lisieux on April 25th, 2009Okaloosa County Sheriff Deputies Burt Lopez and Deputy Warren “Skip” York were fatally shot when they responded to a call to assist at Shoal River Sorting Clays and Shooting Center. The suspected assailant, Joshua Cartwright, 28, of Fort Walton Beach, drove away towards Walton County.
Burt Lopez and Warren Skip York were air lifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. The hospital pronounced them dead.
Sheriff deputies set up a spike on the road ahead of Cartwright. He drove around the spike but a deputy fired into the back of his truck. A witness told the press the deputies fired about 30 – 40 times.
The drama started when Fort Walton Beach Medical Center reported to the sheriff’s office that Elizabeth Marie Cartwright told them she had been assaulted by her husband, Joshua Cartwright.
The deputies responded by approaching Cartwright at the shooting range. They reported Cartwright resisted arrest. The next thing that happened was a report that an officer was down. Cartwright drove away in his truck.
Joshua Cartwright was arrested in Nov 2008, Cartwright was charged with domestic battery on his wife, Elizabeth Marie Cartwright, 21.

Deputy Sheriff Burt Lopez was a good, just, and honorable man. I am honored to have worked beside him briefly on multiple occasions as a Security Officer in Destin, FL. He will most certainly be missed and remembered. Burt, I salute you.

Maybe if you could just take back that moment and realize that shooting another man may mean a return of fire, you would still be here. Appears that voice and video is beginning to show that you went after an innocent man who had to defend himself. Bad situation for all families but shoot first at a shooting range should have meant that this could and would happen. Let the world see the truth as video comes to forefront if your brothers in the “force” are willing to allow it and if they don’t destroy what should be seen by all.

That will teach pigs to use their tasers on people!!!! Best lesson EVER! They can’t treat people like that, the crooked police force got what they asked for. Bravo. Did anyone ever ask him what the wife did to get abused? When a woman hits a man it’s ok, but when a man hits a woman he is an abuser.

donewrongbefore what are you thinking they were doing their job and they were friends of mine and you never know what happened but no one deserves to die in such a brutal manner we weren’t they we don’t know they were brave men who died tragically and abuse is never ok doesn’t matter man or woman doing it I am a woman I know
