Brooke Astor & Anthony Marshall verdict: Astor son Marshall guilty

Updated October 8 2009 – Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, 85, was found guilty of looting from his mother’s estate. Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of the charges of committing grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and making fraud reports on the handling of his mother’s $200 million fortune. Marshall could be sentenced to the maximum of 25 years in jail.

Brooke Astor’s estate lawyer, Francis Morrissey, 66, was convicted of scheming to cheat and forgery. Morrissey could be sentenced to a maximum of 7 years in jail for his role in defrauding Brooke Astor.

Brooke Astor, a rich socialite and philanthropist, learned that doing good did not necessarily beget good karma. Brooke Astor was cheated out of millions by her own son, Anthony “Tony” Marshall. Marshall was charged with grand larceny, possession of stolen property, forgery and conspiracy.

Jury selection for the trial of crimes starts Monday, Feb 23. Tony Marshall may not enter a plea and he claims he is innocent.

Brooke Astor died in August 2007 at the age of 105. Brooke Astor gave New York $200 million through her deceased husband’s foundation called “Vincent Astor Foundation”.

Brooke Astor’s grandson, Philip Marshall, was aware his father Tony Marshall, was ill treating his grandmother. Philip fought to get Brooke Astor’s care transferred to his grandmother’s friend, Annette de la Renta. Philip has a twin brother, Alec Marshall.

    You know, a will is a will- it’s her wish. I think it’s great that he looked out for her- but you know, it’s her money, and she should decide what to do with it.
