Bobby Brown Rastafarian religion: Jiffy Lube not Rastafarian
By Therese Lisieux on December 8th, 2008Bobby T. Brown is a Rastafarian and former lube technician at a Jiffy Lube in Hadley, Mass. Bobby Brown went to court to see if he could get a trial because he thought he was discriminated against due to his hair and beard.
Bobby Brown is a Rastafarian. The Rastafarian religion forbids the man from shaving his beard or cutting his hair. The Rastafarianism religion believes in the redemption of blacks and their return to Africa. Rastafarianism bans the cutting of hair. Another aspect of Rastafarianism involves the use of marijuana in rituals.
Jiffy Lube had a new company policy in 2002. Workers had to become clean shaven and sport short hair styles if they are working with customers. Bobby Brown, with his firm beliefs in Rastafarianism and refusal to change his hair grooming styles, was assigned to work in another department. Brown was assigned to the lower bay of the oil change business.
The high court ruled in favour of Bobby Brown and he is entitled to a fair trial on possible religious discrimination. The lawyer for Jiffy Lube said the company policy had nothing to do with religion.
