Johnson was a Mississippi running back from George County High School. On Monday morning, Dec. 8, Johnson was stopped by a police officer for a routine check, in Lucedale, Mississippi.
Some sites have spelled Johnson’s name as Billey and Billy. We have used both versions here.

The police officer had returned to his car after talking to Johnson when he suddenly heard a gun go off. He saw Johnson on the ground, with his shot gun on top of him. Police are investigating the shooting of Billey Joe Johnson. It could have been an accident or a suicide.
Billey Joe johnson’s family has hired Jerome Carter of The Cochran Firm Mobile to represent them. The George County NAACP is expected to conduct its own investigation. The body of Billey Joe Johnson will undergo an independent autopsy.

I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR OF THE DEATH OF THIS YOUNG MAN. I AM EVEN MORE SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH QUESTIONS BEING ASKED ABOUT THE ALLEDGED “SUICIDE”. HOW IS IT THAT THIS OFFICER/DEPUTY PULLED THIS YOUNG MAN OVER, WALKED UP TO HIS VEHICLE, AND SAW NO SIGN OF THE WEAPON. WE’RE NOT TALKING ABOUT A SMALL HANDGUN HERE…THIS WAS A SHOTGUN, PEOPLE! I am so tired of hearing that this is a case of racism, and hearing that just because it happened in Ms that the deputy must have done it. I live in this small town and have all my life. The number one killer among teens is suicide. There are so many rumors floating that no one knows the truth, well it will come out in the end. Dont talk about the racism in this town if you dont even live here. This young boy was surrounded by friends of both white and black. His girlfriend was white, so he apparently did not see color as a problem. The cops arrest the felons here in lucedale no matter the color!!! If you are breaking the law you go to jail!

Well I just watched Nancy Grace and his family’s attorney stated that when the body was released to the family it was noted that there was only a small gunshot behind the left ear and it could not be possible to shoot yourself with a 12 gauge shot gun and only leave a small hole. Especially when you’re using buckshots…

but “disgusted” – if you are going to be “disgusted” by something, then be disgusted by his own despicable language and how sad and tragic his parents didn’t teach him better.
this is the kind of thing that needs to stop — racism against yourself (or in this case — against himself).
It doesn’t matter to me who is saying it — it is wrong, wrong, wrong.
As for the case itself, let the system do it’s thing – - no doubt it will show this was a very, tragic accident. (the reason you don’t see that is because of all the times something similar has happened in the past – and believe me – it has happened many times – shotgun, car, accidentaly shooting — is because the media feeding frenzy wasn’t all over it).
I’ll give you an example – a woman was riding with her boyfriend (a police officer) as a “civilian” officer, which was permitted in my city at one time.
He needed his shotgun and she tried to get it for him (they were both sitting in the car) and she accidentally shot her leg off! Accidents with shotgus do happen – in the car! (btw – she is now a police officer herself).
So, give it some time, you will see.

to tired of this: Accidents happen – you can’t rely on a hired attorney.
As the facts will come out — the kid was banging on his EX-girlfriend’s door/window at 5 AM (scary in an of itself!) then allegedly ran a stop light and a stop sign while a police officer was in pursuit.
He was likely just a tad nervous at this time and tried to do something with the firearm without raising suspicion of the officer. Say he were reaching around behind him feeling around to try to move it either in view or out of view.
Anyway — it goes off. If he were aiming for himself — then the hole in his head would have been bigger — a direct hit. or if someone else were doing it (like the police officer – who is probaby an expert marksman — he would have made sure he had a direct hit).
But because the injury appears slight probably means the window took the brunt of the hit/buckshot and the kid got hit by a piece and it was fatal.
It happens — that’s why it’s called an ACCIDENT.
of course all angles should be investigated — but let common sense rule first and let the investigators do their job. Rome wasn’t built in a day and the police need time to rule out any other than an accident.
But it is all very likely just a tragic, senseless accident by a kid who was out doing something he shouldn’t have been doing — if he would have just gone hunting as reportedly he was supposed to be doing and driving more carefully, none of this would have happened. lesson learned hopefully for someone else.

I DONT THINK STRESS HAD ANY THING TO DO WITH THIS UNLESS MAYBE STRESS FROM THAT OFFICER. CAUSE LIKE SOME ONE SAID IF THE OFFICER DIDN’T SEE THE GUN IN THE FRONT SEAT WHERE WAS IT.AND SINCE HIS RECORD WAS CLEAN THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN NO REASON TO SEARCH THE CAR UNLESS THE OFFICER ONCE AGAIN WAS STRESSED. AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED HE OPENED THE CAR DOOR AND THE GUN LANDED ON TOP OF HIM.. I am sorry to report. Mississippi has a lot racism.
Folks in this state continue to dislike Blacks.The sad part is that a lot famuous folks are born here but will not come back because of the racism. Mississippi is proud of being labeled a racist state. Honestly, I wish when I leave Mississippi and I can tell other people that’s not about our State but is true. Somethings
need to change but it will start with the mind and heart.

Lisa Lowe: You make a terrible, unfounded accusation. There is nothing to indicate that this was a murder. There is no reason for the Deputy to be defended except from ridiculous, racially-biased opinions such as yours.
This young man had committed three crimes already that morning by the time he was stopped. He violated a restraining order, he ran a red light, and he ran a stop sign.
I do not believe he committed suicide, I don’t believe he was trying to retrieve the gun to shoot the Deputy [as some have said on other websites), but I do believe this was an accidental shooting. The left side of his head was blown off. I believe he was probably trying to move the gun from the back of the cab of his truck, and in doing so, got the trigger mechanism caught, and the gun discharged.
He was standing outside the vehicle with the door open when this happened.

I don’t even have to present race as an issue, to indicate that something is not right about what happened to Billey Joe. By now you should realize that I have a big voice just like you, and I will continue to argue the facts. You try to seem like you are an expert on delivering a factual account of what happened, and then demoralize others for showing their emotions in comment. But you have let the speculation of others convince you that he didn’t commit suicide but rather an accidental shooting with no proof of any of it. I will not put anything past anyone, and I know I have no idea where he was standing when the gunshot happened because I was not present. Were you? Only god and the deputy knows what happened. Hopefully the original piece of his head showing what kind of bullet wound can be retrieved without tampering to prove what kind of gun was used in this fatality. You present all the negative attributes that Billey Joe was dealing with, but you will not provide anything negative about the deputy. I don’t care how high and mighty anyone thinks they are, we all have downfalls. How about you discuss some of the deputies negative attributes since you seem to know him so well just to keep your debate on an equal playing field. The deputy will have his day for not following procedure during the traffic stop, and that would be enough to raise speculation.

First of all, I did not demoralize anyone. I stated the fact. The accusation Lisa made is ridiculous, and it is racially biased.
Lisa called our town a “hick town” and called it a racist murder.
I do not know the Deputy. He DID follow procedure. I don’t know where you get the idea he didn’t. Billey Joe got out of his truck and walked toward the Deputy when stopped, the Deputy got his license and asked him to return to his truck. The Deputy turned and went to his car to radio in his license number to run a check on it when this happened.
Perhaps it was suicide, perhaps he WAS going to shoot the Deputy. I don’t believe either of those things. The road where this happened is well-traveled that time of the morning, and I had passed there only a couple of minutes prior to this tragedy.
As far as where he was standing, the information that has been released stated that the window was blown from the inside out, and there was brain matter on the inside of the door. They believe he was standing between the door and the truck.
Also, there was no bullet wound. The officials have already stated the day he died that he was killed by a shotgun blast to the left side of his face & head.
Equal playing field. An interesting concept, since so many of you bleeding hearts have convicted this poor Deputy without any reasonable doubt except your racism. Hmmm….racism…how reasonable is that? Not very.

Again I ask (like i have a asked a number of law enforcement) when he got his license the police is not supposed to take their eyes off of the suspect until they follow the orders of getting back into the vehicle. That is actually for police safety. If Billey Joe(or anyone in that situation) wanted to, he could have taken the officers life because standard procedure of an officer would make sure that the suspect returned to the inside of the vehicle BEFORE turning his back and walking to the patrol car.
When you passed by the scene was the sun out yet because I too know that road very well and at that time of the morning the sun is normally not out yet(being the shortest days in the month are those of December), especially when the incident took place.
Once again race is not in my equation of what happened that night. I don’t have to insinuate anything based on color when the facts just don’t add up. He did not follow procedure when he turned his back on a “suspect” to return to his vehicle. I have been pulled over before (in lucedale and other cities) and not once does the police take their eyes of me. And if I am out of the car, the officer does not tell me to get back in my vehicle without making sure I do so before he/she returns to the patrol car. How is this reasonable….? NOT VERY.
Regardless of what I may want to beleive happened that night, it is still three options: suicide, accident, homicide.
And as for Lisa saying we are from a hick town. You’re right, it is not her place to say that unless she is from Lucedale, but I must agree that our town is very “hickish”. That coming from a native of the town. I love some of the people there, but it is what it is.

No, the sun was not out, but the parking lot has lights, although I would not consider it illuminated like, say, the Wal-Mart parking lot.
At some point when a policeman returns to his car to radio in, he has to turn his back on you. I was stopped recently in Lucedale, and that was exactly what the Deputy who stopped me did.
Billey Joe was a clean-cut young man and fairly well-known. Perhaps the Deputy knew him and didn’t feel there was any reason to keep a close eye on him. As far as he knew, he was only guilty of running a red light and a stop sign.
Not “following procedure” in that regard is minor and does not throw his account of what happened into question.
Now, if the Grand Jury comes back and they find no evidence that Billey Joe died of a gunshot that was NOT self-inflicted, or was done by a weapon other than the shotgun in Billey Joe’s possession such as a handgun or rifle, I’ll be right beside you demanding that the persons responsible be brought to answer for it.
I know it doesn’t count for much, and I feel juvenile bringing it up, but I watch some of the criminal investigation shows, and while I don’t know if Mississippi is quite up to that level, I would hope that we have enough competent people in our law enforcement to be able to ascertain the truth.

Picture the cop’s interaction with Billy for trying to run from him at first or did he make it there before the gun went off? What do you see? Are your ears ringing from the gunshot sound?

Educated: Because a lot of people hear the term “self-inflicted” which is what was reported by the Sheriff’s office, and they have assumed that to mean suicide.
The investigation has not been released with a ruling yet. Grand Jury is on February 12th.

Debi… are you aware that our former sheriff has said that proper procedures were not followed for several reasons, one main cause being deputy did not call in the “chase” that pursued once Billey ran the red lights and stop sign? And while you are judging his choice of music…check my space a little more carefully and you will see kids from all of the country BLACK AND WHITE have rap lyrics as their headings…it doesn’t mean anything except the fact that they like that particular song… Also, did you know Billey? Evidently not, because you would know that he has been pulled over SEVERAL times by the cops and he always has that gun in his car in the back seat and he never gets out of the car because we as African Americans in this area know not too. You can be in denial all day…but try being a black person in this county and deal with the police on any level and you will know just how racist this place is… Also, Billey was a good kid… and his parents are good people so who’s to say that “you know who” wasn’t lying… why want they cooperate with the independent investigation? I’m not pointing fingers but something just aint right

I have been to George County and traced everything released in this story. None of it matches, dear. Sad but true.
The line of travel from Hannah’s to Benndale carpet. The position of the crime scene. The direction he would have had to travel to get there. [If he was running from the cops, why bypass the highway? Billey wasn't driving, when that truck left Hannah's and he wasn't shot at Benndale's, either.] It’s time to sweep around that tiny trailer park on “L” street.
The scenario’s released in the murder are only going to make sense to the folks doing the cover up and those who don’t care about real justice for him. There are so many more things that will come out.
1. phone records from BJ, Hannah, Savannah, parents, officers [both sheriff and LPD], and BJ’s friend that he called, last.
2. who were the 2 other men outside when Hannah called her mother to say, BJ was beating on the door? [He was beating on it to get in because those 2 men were about to kill him] {Hattiesburg American’s article]
3. How often does Sullivan come to work early?
4. How did he have gunpowder on both his hands?
5. the hole in BJ’s head. Smaller then the tip of my ring finger. How does a shotgun blast killing, allow you an OPEN CASKET funeral?
6. His left ear wasn’t blown off and missing. It was on him during the funeral. Perhaps you should have gone to it and not just believed the hype.
7. It takes longer then 1 minute and 8 seconds to drive from Hannah’s to Benndale Carpet, doing 50 mph [which is all you can do and make the turns it would take to get there. So how it took more the 3 minutes, each of 47 times, we drove it. Sullivan’s a liar, if he was even there.
8. Why haven’t any photo’s been released of Sullivan and where is he now?
9. Hannah signs his dedication page, everyday. On her myspace page, she goes at her mother. Why?
10. What about the shots reported from near Hannah’s home? Benndale carpet isn’t close enough to her home, for a gunshot to be heard from the carpet store.
11. if someone is fleeing the cops, then why pass up all those WELL LIT areas, if you plan to stop and go to a DARK ROAD, off the main road and then stop? [They wouldn’t but someone who needed to set up and dump a body would go to the side street. less traffic and time to push him out of the truck, when a car does pass.
12. Why put a curtain, but then allow everyone to view him, accept his parents?
Even people who didn’t live in George Co, knew that BJ visited Hannah every morning. His killers knew he would be there and laid and waited for him to come. Then killed him and injected their concoction of lies to explain it away. It was premeditated, for sure. And the independent investigation is going shine and big @ss light all up through Lucedale. On Hannah’s parents, the police agencies and citizens. Just 137 interviews later, for me, and I know there will never be a fair investigation, here in Lucedale. Not even in Mississippi. But that is the history of this state when it comes to Justice. Ms. has to be dragged, kicking and screaming, through the halls of Justice, before a conviction is delivered. We’re going to stay the fight. BJ had the nickname, “Little Sayers” around the football camps, my son attended with him. Lil Sayers talked to Hannah every single day from camps, each summer, since 2006. she loved him and that is the reason he, was killed. Justice is blind, means, all were intended to recieve fair and impartial just prudence. It doens’t mean, cover your eyes up or look the other way. Citizens of George Co., know it’s possible that the kid was murdered and probable. But your hatred will not allow you to act on it. But Hannah’s ready to act and she will. For now, be tormented. but when the REAL truth comes out, I’ll be back to read your vent!

He did shoot himself at Benndale’s. He did not leave the main highway. Highway 26 IS the main highway going out of town in that direction. He came in that way, and he left that way.
What about the phone records? I’m sure they can get them if they haven’t already. The Grand Jury has already listened to the audios from that morning within the context of the hearing, including the dispatch calls prior to and after the accident.
No one was trying to kill him. That is the rumor she is so desperately trying to get started now since none of he other lies have worked.
The speed limits from Hannah’s house to where he shot himself are 25 and 35 mph….not 55.
Who cares how often he came to work early? The Grand Jury report stated that he came in early at the request of the night shift as a courtesy.
Did you even READ the Grand Jury report?! He had neglible gunshot residue on both hands from handling his service revolver that morning.
The wound was from a gunshot blast. You haven’t even seen it. The “small entry wound” comment is a lie. Straight up.
His left ear was completely destroyed in the blast, and the earring from it was embedded in the inside of the door of the truck. If there was an “ear” on his left side, it’s because it was reconstructed. There was even part of his head that had been removed for testing that was still in the lab in Jackson and probably still is.
Sullivan did not drive from Hannah’s. He had just left the Department, coming in from the side, and saw Billey Joe run the light at the intersection ahead of him. He turned left and started to pursue him and then saw him run the stop sign at which point he followed Billey Joe until he pulled over at Benndale Carpets. It’s a short distance. Probably not more than a mile maybe.
Why SHOULD they put Sullivan’s pictures out there? For what purpose? So that y’all can make good on your threats to kill him?
You don’t even know it’s Hannah that is signing his “Dedication Page”…it could be anyone. Even if she was inclined to, I’m sure her boyfriend wouldn’t like that. Going at her mother? Why don’t you tell us why? Who cares? She’s a teenager, and most teenagers “go at” their parents a lot. We all know teenagers know more than any of US.
There were no shots reported near Hannah’s home.
He was on the main road, not a side road. A road that is heavily traveled, and parts of the incident were seen by several different witnesses, all of whom testified to the Grand Jury. Your theory is pure idiocy. There was no TIME for him to be murdered and dumped there. His own father testified what time he left his house that morning, and there was barely time for him to leave there, beat on Hannah’s door, flee from there, and get stopped by Deputy Sullivan.
Yes, let’s also condemn the officers for preserving the accident scene by cordoning it off from the curious, and trying to spare the family the sight of their son before there was any chance of making him a little more presentable. Yeah, let’s assume it was something underhanded even though there were several people close to Billey Joe who came in to identify him to spare the family that task…Let’s not give any credit for having COMPASSION to the officers there.
Hannah’s not about to do anything. She was well past Billey Joe and had moved on with her life to someone who would treat her well and not abuse her.
The real truth has been there all the time. The case is settled. Anything from this point forward is simply fabrication.

ITS NOT EASY BEING BLACK IN GEORGE COUNTY TRUST ME I KNOW. ITS HARD WE ARE HARRASSED FREQUENTLY. BILLEY JOE WAS A AMAZING PERSON AND A VERY IMPORTANT PERSON TO ME. HE WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO HIS FUTURE NOT TRYING TO RUN AWAY FROM IT SO HOW COULD ANYONE SAY HE WOULD KILL HIMSELF ESPECIALLY DEBE. WE ARE BOTH FROM GEORGE COUNTY AND WE KNOW EACH OTHER LOOK AT THE FACTS YOU KNOW SULLIVAN AND THE PEOPLE STANDING BEHIND HIM ARE LIEN. BILLEY JOE HAD DEFENSIVE WOUNDS ON HIM HE WAS SHOT IN THE HAND AS IF HE WAS BEATEN AND TORTURED. HE WAS PLACED AT BENNDALE CARPET BUT THT IS NOT WHERE HE WAS KILLED. HIS BODY WAS MOVED AND THE SCENE WAS STAGED. THEY PLANNED THIS AND WILL GET AWAY WITH IT BECAUSE EVERYTHING IS BEING COVERED UP, THE ONLY WAY WE WILL ALL KNOW THE TRUTH IS IF WE CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR BILLEY JOE HE CAN’T SPEAK FOR HIMSELF SO NOW WE ARE HIS VOICE. JUSTICE IS NOT BEING SERVED. LANEY THE HEADLINE ON HIS MYSPACE IS FROM A VERY POPULAR SONG BY A VERY IMPORTANT AND POPULAR ARTIST. WHICH MEANS THAT AT ANYTIME DEATH COULD COME KNOCKING AT HIS DOOR SO HE WILL BE PREPARED AT ALL TIMES TO EITHER DEFEND HIMSELF OR ACCEPT HIS FATE, BUT HONESTLY HE WASN’T ABLE TO DEFEND HIMSELF THIS TIME HE NEVER HAD A CHANCE. AND HOW COULD YOU INSULT HIS PARENTS. ANNETE AND JOE ARE BOTH AMAZING PEOPLE WHY DO YOU THINK THEY HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE STANDING BEHIND THEM PROVIDING THEM WITH THE LOVE AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO GET THROUGH THIS TRAGEDY. HIS PARENTS INSTILLED IN HIM AND HIS BROTHER RESPECT LOYALTY HONOR INTEGRITY SELF-LOVE INTEGRITY AND MUCH MORE WHICH IS ALL THE THINGS I WOULD SAY YOUR PARENTS OBVIOUSLY DIDN’T INSTILL IN YOU OTHERWISE YOU WOULDN’T PRESENT YOURSELF WITH SUCH IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY. MY FRIEND WAS MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD AND EVERYONE WANTS TO ACT AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED. OFFICERS OF THE LAW, THOSE WHO ARE SUPPOSE TO SERVE AND PROTECT THE CITIZENS, ARE KILLING CHILDREN AND HIDING BEHIND THEIR BADGES. BUT JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED AND SULLIVAN WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR HIS ACTONS, AND WHEN HE IS FOUND GUILTY OF PREMEDITATED MURDER THOSE WHO SAID HE WAS INNOCENT WILL FEEL AND LOOK STUPID. SULLIVAN IS NO MAN HE’S A WORTHLESS AND WEAK,COWARD WHO DOESN’T DESERVE TO BE FREE AND EVEN THOUGH IT WANT BRING BILLEY JOE BACK IT WILL BRING CLOSURE ONCE THE TRUTH IS OUT AND SULLIVAN IS BEHIND BARS. DON’T GIVE UP ON THIS THE TRUTH IS THERE WE JUST HAVE TO FIND IT.

I LAY AWAKE IN MY BED AT NIGHT CRYING OUT FOR YOU BECAUSE I WANT NOTHING MORE THEN TO SEE YOU AND FEEL YOU NEXT TO ME. I CARRY YOU IN MY HEART BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE YOU WILL ALWAYS BE.
