Ben Underwood, of Elk Grove, Calif, has died. Underwood died on Jan 19.

Ben Underwood was almost 17 when he died. Underwood had retinoblastoma when he was a toddler. Underwood became blind.

Underwood taught himself echolocation and learned to identify objects. Underwood could do sports and rode his bike around his neighborhood. Underwood appeared on TV shows and traveled the world to share his experiences.

In 2007, Underwood was discovered to have cancer in his sinus cavity. Treatment failed to eradicate the tumor. Underwood’s mother, Aquanetta Gordon, did everything she could to help him.
