The Bell Witch story is a legend and supposedly true story. A witch haunted the Bell family of Jon Bell. Bell lived from the 1750s and had 7 children. In 1870, John Bell was hunting when he shot at a weird looking creature who vanished into thin air.

The Bell family was haunted by sounds in their home. There allegedly was a witch haunting the Bell family although no humans were found responsible for the noises made. In 1819, the spirit started to speak in a female voice to communicate to the Bell family. Betsy Bell, the youngest child, was especially targeted by the witch. Later, Jon Bell became the target and Betsy was released from the haunting. John Bell fell sick and died under mysterious circumstances.

The movie, An American Haunting, was written based on the legend of The Bell Witch. This movie suggested that Betsy Bell was sexually abused by her father and she poisoned her father in the end. The Bell Witch was suggested to be a woman who was wronged by John Bell and she cursed him.
