The author is Barbara Kerley. Alice Roosevelt’s mother, Alice Lee, died after childbirth. Teddy Roosevelt was so devastated he asked his sister to raise Baby Lee (Alice). Teddy Roosevelt remained affected over Alice Lee’s death for the rest of his life. Teddy Roosevelt never spoke or wrote the name of Alice Lee during his remaining lifetime.
