Athelston Kelson, ex heroic policeman, was identified in a lineup as the notorious “Bling Bandit.” Athelston Kelson received the Purple Heart for Vietnam War Service. After Athelston Kelson returned from Nam, he embarked on his 33 year career as a detective.

Hilda Kelson said that her son had terminal liver cancer, a broken marriage and his past traumatic experience as a Vietnam War veteran. In June 2008, Athelston Kelson was told he had terminal liver cancer. Hilda Kelson suspected Athelston went over the edge and committed crime because of all those factors. The “Bling Bandit” wore a ring that was a retirement present from NYPD. That was the breakthough that the police had to identify Athelston Kelson.
