Ann Gotlib: George Oakley suspected in Gotlib’s disappearance
By Clarencia Cynrae on December 4th, 2008Ann Gotlib, 12, went missing on June 1, 1983. Gotlib’s bicycle was found abandoned near Bacon’s department store at Bashford manor Mall, near Gerald Court, where the Gotlibs lived.
A former prison inmate of the 1980s – 1990s told police George Ooakley, his former inmate, confessed to him about killing Ann Gotlib. This ex inmate took a polygraph test that verified his statement.
George Oakley was arrested in Jan. 1984 for stabbing a girl, 13, of Mesamure Court, Louisville, Kentucky. Oakley was convicted of attempted rape and burglary. George Oakley was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Police had given George Oakley a polygraph test on Ann Gotlib and Oakley failed his test. Police lacked evidence to connect Oakley to Gotlib’s disappearance to press charges against him.
Police suspected Ann Gotlib was killed but her body was never found.
George Oakley died in Alabama in October 2002. Oakley had lung cancer and he was on medical parole for 3 months when he died. George Oakley’s photo is at the link.
Since police have released the name of a suspect in Ann Gotlib’s disappearance, they hope that people would come forward with information. Police are asking for leads for the anonymous crime tip line at 574-LMPD.
