Andrew Sheridan: Sheridan knocked down senior Russian spy (photos)

By Therese Lisieux on December 28th, 2008

Andrew Sheridan, 35, a British diplomat in Moscow, knocked down Alexander T, 38, a senior Russian spy in FSB. The Russian spy could not be identified in full to protect his identity.

Sheridan was unhurt in the accident on Mon. evening, Dec. 22. Sheridan told the road police he could not see the pedestrian in time to stop his car because the man was hidden by a parked car. A news agency posted the news but some hours later, the news was removed without an explanation.

Andrew Sheridan is the deputy director of the British Council in Moscow. The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has labeled the British Council a front for ‘a nest of spies.’ The British Foreign Office denied this. The Kremlin claimed the British Council owed a £2.3million tax bill. There is an on-going dispute about the tax bill and some offices of the British Council were ordered to close.

Andrew Sheridan has diplomatic immunity and would not be prosecuted for the car crash. Sheridan’s wife, Ekaterina, works for the British Council too. Ekaterina attended a Red Army school in Cuba and later studied at Manchester University. Her last name was not given. Presumably, she is Ekaterina Sheridan.

The British Foreign Office said Mr. Sheridan had an unfortunate accident. There was nothing more sinister to it. Russia’s FSB refused to comment.
