Alfred E Smith memorial dinner: McCain & Obama

John McCain spoke at the Alfred E Smith memorial dinner. McCain said Barack Obama tended to heap George Bush’s failed Republicanism on him. McCain said Obama’s nickname for him was “George Bush.” Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were present at the dinner. Obama was shown good naturedly laughing and clapping at McCain’s jokes. McCain’s speech was before Obama’s speech and the videos are arranged according to the sequence.

Obama’s speech to “roast” McCain is in Part 3. Obama’s speech cracked a few jokes at himself. He used the same line as Palin, thanking the chance to be “palling around” such distinguished guests. He poked a jibe at McCain’s advanced age by referring to McCain as a few generations his senior. Obama gave a shout out to Hillary Clinton, thanking her for her work and for giving him grey hairs. Obama reminded people about the economy again, by repeating the joke about the McCain aide saying if they talk about the economy, the Republicans will lose. Obama emphasized he was not born in a manger (meaning he was not born in some forsaken place other than his stated birthplace, Hawaii). Both candidates’ speeches were full of humor and may not be taken seriously.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the way you introduced this piece – making it negative against McCain. He did ACCUSE Obama. Both candidates took their humor from things happening in this campaign. Your headline makes it sound like Obama didn’t even speak! Do you not understand satire? Lighten up!

There is a word missing from that post. HE DID NOT – I REPEAT NOT ACCUSE OBAMA.

    Carla,

Thanks. That was a strong word to use and has been replaced. McCain’s economics policies has been put down even before he has a chance to explain them because many refer to Bush since Republicans are perceived to tend to continue their predecessor’s policies.
