Albert Woodfox: Ex Black Panther Woodfox released?

By Clarencia Cynrae on November 27th, 2008

Albert Woodfox, 61, has been in jail for 37 years. Woodfox is due to be released after US district Judge James Brady ruled that Woodfox should be freed on bail. Woodfox had a prior conviction for killing a prison guard but the judge has overturned his conviction. Albert Woodfox was an ex member of a political organization called the Black Panther.

Albert Woodfox’s lawyers praised the action of the judge but the State of Louisiana’s AG James Caldwell has filed an emergency appeal to attempt to hold Woodfox in detention while the State appeals to reverse Judge Brady’s rulings.

Albert Woodfox was in prison in 1972 when a prison guard, Brent Miller, was killed. Albert Woodfox was convicted based on the testimony of a fellow prisoner, Hezekiah Brown. However, Brown’s testimony was not accepted after it was known that Brent Miller was involved in trying to get Brown pardoned.

There is a long story and photo at the link on Albert Woodfox.
